Earn your Horse Rider badge at a real working ranch.
Ivey Ranch helps Scout troops complete badge requirements in a safe, hands-on environment. In 90 minutes, your troop will learn horse care, anatomy, and equipment — and spend time in the saddle with guidance from our instructors.
What Scouts Will Do
Every session covers four core areas that count toward the Horse Rider badge requirements:
Horse
Anatomy
Scouts learn to identify the parts of the horse and understand how they move and function.
Horse
Grooming
Hands-on experience brushing and caring for a horse the way a real horseperson would.
Tack & Equipment
Scouts learn what each piece of riding equipment is, what it’s called, and how it works.
Basics of Equitation
30–45 minutes in the saddle learning the fundamentals of horsemanship and riding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all. Our instructors work with all ability levels, from first-time riders to those with more experience. The session is designed to be accessible and fun for everyone.
We cover four of the six requirements for the Horse Rider badge. Troop leaders are responsible for coordinating the remaining two requirements independently.
All participants must wear long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. No sandals, flip-flops, or shorts. Safety helmets are provided for the mounted portion of the session.
The Scout Program is structured specifically for troop members. Parents and siblings are welcome to watch — and if they’d like their own horse experience, we’d love to set them up with a Meet and Greet or an Able-Bodied Riding lesson.
The safety of our Scouts and horses always comes first. If conditions make the session unsafe, we will reach out to the troop leader directly to discuss rescheduling.
